My Bali Today – Sidemount diving

Diving Indo Team tries sidemount diving

Originating from technical diving especially cave diving, Sidemount diving is becoming increasingly popular, especially as the demographics of divers sees an increase in age as the sport matures.
The weight of the tanks is distributed along the sides of your body rather than the back which is relief to many divers with back problems. In addition, if you are boat diving then the tanks are handed down to you to clip on and as soon as they hit the water the tanks feel weightless so there is no strain or weight on the back entering the water.
The big difference with sidemount diving versus single tank diving is the configuration of the tanks, each tank must have a separate first stage which are attached to a harness and backplate. During the dive you will need to swap from one regulator to another to compensate for the air usage and the weight difference of the tank to keep your buoyancy level.
Willy Alberti is a PADI Sidemount Instructor and long term guest and friend of Diving Indo, so when we knew he brought his sidemount diving gear to Bali this trip, we asked him if he could let the diving staff of Diving Indo have a try in our custom made dive pool.
PADI Instructor Eddy, Divemasters Hadi and Budi and Divemaster Trainee Bobby all had a try on sidemount and loved learning something new. Here are a few photos from the sidemount diving day.
The PADI Sidemount diving course takes two days and you will learn how to:
– Properly assemble and configure sidemount scuba diving equipment.
– Trim your weight system and sidemount gear so you’re perfectly balanced in the water.
– Manage gas by switching second stages as planned, wearing two cylinders.
– Respond correctly to potential problems when sidemount diving.
